The wintry weather sweeping the UK is causing many a runny nose, waves of reemerging puffa coats and even more icy toes.
The northerly winds, nicknamed the “Beast From the East”, have brought heavy snowfall and arctic temperatures as well as disruption to many train lines and driving routes across the country.
Meanwhile, you’re over here wondering how you’re going to continue marathon training or get your outdoor bootcamp in when a mere two minutes out your house makes your face go numb.
Well, perhaps there’s one upside to working out like the trooper you are even when it’s so cold you can see your breath.

Glen Haney, MA, certified personal trainer and exercise physiologist.
Yes—but not enough to truly make a difference.
“It is true that you burn slightly more calories in colder weather. That’s because your metabolic rate increases to warm your body, and that bit of extra work means more burn,” Haney begins.
“But in the context of exercise, it’s just not enough to make it count. If you’re working out pretty intensely, the exertion is ultimately what makes the difference—not the cold weather.”
Duly noted. That being said, previous research published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temps. And quicker runs do burn more calories. So there’s that.
