The pill – it’s the cause of your unexplained weight gain, that angry bout of acne, those mood swings, hunger pangs and cravings. And your depression. Right? When it comes to a scapegoat, the pill is the perfect target.

That is until now.

According to a review of 30 years’ worth of pill-related research, published in the journal Contraception, the pill – the mini or progesterone-only pill, in particular, is not linked to depression.

Nor are other forms of progesterone-only contraception.

And if you already experience depression and start taking the mini-pill or another method of contraception? Well, it won’t make your symptoms worse.

Which is quite a statement. Especially when you consider previous studies, including one from a team of Danish researchers, which concluded that women taking the combined pill were 23% more likely to experience depression, while those on the mini-pill had 34% increased risk.

So why should you believe this latest review, then? Well, the team behind the findings discovered that of the studies they looked at, all of them were, in some way, flawed. For example, the women often knew that what they were being given was the pill – which can lead to bias and a misreporting of symptoms. Plus, the team also wants to highlight how impossible it is for these studies to measure every given variable, leading to further inaccuracies in the data. After all, some groups such as adolescents and women who are pregnant, with children, have a naturally heightened depression risk, simply due to their life stage and circumstances.

Even combined hormonal contraception was found not to produce mood-related problems in a 2016 study by The Ohio State University.

The researchers hope that their findings will put women at ease when it comes to taking the pill by making them aware that, for most women, taking the pill does not lead to depression. After all, depression is complex. It can occur for a number of reasons, not all of which can be targeted or pinpointed.
